The most recent screen adaptation of The Color Purple graced theaters in Christmas 2023. A modern perspective on the titular character Celie Harris-Johnson–played marvelously by Fantasia Barrino–demonstrates an enterprising young woman who eventually achieves self-actualization after years of heartache and abuse. When Celie becomes an owner of a pants shop, this is minor in comparison to reuniting with her children. However, it’s important for showcasing empowerment and ownership in today’s environment.

Throughout “The Color Purple,” Celie faces numerous challenges and traumatic experiences, including abuse, discrimination, and the separation from her sister. Despite these hardships, Celie undergoes a remarkable transformation. Here’s how her journey can be seen as an emergence of entrepreneurial spirit in a broader sense:

Self-Discovery and Independence: Celie starts as a suppressed and submissive character, but as the novel progresses, she undergoes a process of self-discovery. She learns to assert herself and, in doing so, gains a sense of independence. This newfound independence is a form of entrepreneurship as she starts to take control of her own life.

Building Relationships: Celie’s ability to form meaningful connections with other women, like Shug Avery and Sofia, contributes to her growth. These relationships serve as sources of support and encouragement, fostering a sense of community. Entrepreneurship often involves networking and building relationships, and Celie’s journey reflects this aspect.

Empowerment through Writing: Celie expresses her thoughts and experiences through letter writing, initially addressed to God and later to her sister. This act of putting her thoughts on paper serves as a form of entrepreneurship, allowing her to articulate her feelings and find strength in her own voice. Writing becomes a powerful tool for self-empowerment.

Overcoming Adversity: Celie faces immense adversity, including abuse from her stepfather and husband. However, her ability to endure and rise above these challenges showcases resilience—an essential trait for entrepreneurs facing obstacles in their endeavors. Celie’s journey can inspire individuals to persevere in the face of adversity.

Entrepreneurial Mindset: Through Celie’s business activities, her mindset evolves from one of passive endurance to active participation in her own life. This transformation is reminiscent of an entrepreneurial spirit, where individuals take initiative and actively shape their destinies.

Interestingly, Fantasia initially expressed hesitation in playing the role on screen after having portrayed the character on broadway. But the former American Idol winner ultimately decided she wouldn’t let fear get in her way and has now received continued adulation for her performance. It’s an indomitable spirit of resilience that also allows the entrepreneur to take risks in this way.
